If anyone has any empty plastic containers (2L or 5L like that pictured) that are in good useable condition (including the lid), we would ask if you could leave them in the red bin under the metal stairs please. We will be using them as floats for the barley straw in the water. Thank you

New BGA bloom

Fri Nov 12 2021

by Caroline

As you all know, we have been keeping a close eye on the water and sending samples off regularly for testing. The BGA levels were falling and we were hopeful we had passed the worst, but for the last month they unfortunately have been rising again. A club member and committee members have also recently reported visual evidence of a new bloom within the water which would therefore correlate with the evidence from the water samples.

At our forthcoming AGM (date to be announced soon), we will have some vacant positions on the committee. Two positions that are coming up are president and vice president. Whilst these positions do not have voting rights, you would be able to attend the monthly committee meetings and take part in discussions, helping to steer the club forward into 2022. Your other important role would be to chair the AGM next year. These roles would be a great opportunity for members who cannot committ to an indepth role but would still like to be involved.

A further drop which is great news! We think we have passed the worst. It is still over the WHO threshold of 20,000 for short-term health issues but from the analysis it also looks like the filaments are breaking up and we are not noticing any new scum formations either. We will continue to send samples off weekly and report back to the members

Huge thanks to Eric, our rear commodore and some of our junior members who have been busy netting and placing barley straw in the lake to start working against the blue green algae. This straw will work by releasing chemicals which inhibit the growth of algae. Please note the lake is still closed at present but we will continue to provide updates when we can do
